But what is Business intelligence (BI)? A term that&#8217;s grown in use in recent years, but the principles have applied to successful business forever.</p>
<h2>BI for Decision Making</h2>
<p>The aim of business intelligence is to support decision making. Of course there&#8217;s an emotional element to making every decisions but using the right intelligence (data which has been turned in to information) can help people make better decisions. BI is gained through analysing an organisation&#8217;s own data, sometimes by analysing competitor data and if possible researching the wider environment the business operates in and gaining data from there too. All this data is then analysed so that it becomes useful information.</p>
<p>BI can then be used to inform decisions being made. For example:</p>
<ul>
<li>how much of a product should be produced</li>
<li> how accurate sales forecasting has been</li>
</ul>
<p>But perhaps more interestingly, BI can help to answer questions such as:</p>
<ul>
<li>if production is switched from one product to another &#8211; would revenue increase</li>
<li>what are products actually being used for</li>
<li>is our market share growing at the same rate as the market</li>
</ul>
<p>Bi can also be used to spot unusual behaviour and so perhaps exploit an opportunity.</p>
